Church Shoe Drive Fundraiser
Quail Springs United Methodist Church is conducting a 90 day shoe collection drive, August through October, 2014, to raise funds for the church’s new after school program, while benefiting microenterprise ventures in developing nations and keeping old shoes out of local landfills. Individuals can help by donating gently worn, used shoes at the church, located at 14617 N Penn, Oklahoma City. In the US alone, approximately 630 million pairs of shoes are thrown away per year. The materials used to manufacture a pair of shoes are created from chemical compounds that will create health hazards if left to disintegrate openly or in landfills. By donating your gently worn, used shoes to the Quail Springs United Methodist Shoe Drive your shoes are given a second chance to make a difference. All donated shoes will be redistributed to microenterprise partners through Funds2Orgs and used in developing nations for impoverished people to start, maintain, and grow a unique business opportunity to feed, clothe, and house their families. “We are very excited to be conducting this shoe drive in the Oklahoma City area,” notes Rev. David Clewell, Pastor. "This campaign will raise funds that directly benefit our new after school program that will be provided to the community free of charge. The additional advantages of diverting shoes from the waste stream to create commerce and sustainability in peoples’ lives make this a win-win for everyone,” said Clewell. "Our goal is to collect 7,000 pairs of shoes. The only way we can do that is if community members step up and help. I am calling on everyone to clean out their unwanted, gently worn, used shoes and donate them to us." For more information about the shoe drive, contact Rev. David Clewell at 405.755.9477 or david.clewell@qsumc.org.

Romanian Revolution Survivor
Izabella McMillon, who grew up during the communistic regime in Romania, is coming to the Oklahoma City area for several speaking engagements to share a compelling story and heartfelt initiative to help children in need worldwide. At the age of 12, Izabella remembers living during the time of the deadly Romanian Revolution. McMillon never had toys or the opportunity to have a normal childhood, but a message of hope and faith arrived in the form of a simple, gift-filled shoebox that profoundly influenced her life. Now married and living in the United States, McMillon is traveling throughout the country sharing personal reflections from her youth. She conveys the challenges of living in poverty, the shoebox that followed, and her effort every year to help Operation Christmas Child deliver 10 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children worldwide in similar conditions of war, poverty, and need.

Internet 101 for Parents
Presenter: EMCU Detective Jennifer Wright Children have embraced the internet with remarkable enthusiasm as they go online to learn, play, and communicate with their friends. Unfortunately, cyberspace is not always safe place for youngsters to visit. Some sex offenders use the privacy and anonymity of the Internet to prey on vulnerable children and teenagers whose Internet access is often unsupervised. The National Center of Missing & Exploited Children disclosed that one in five children age 10-17 received a sexual solicitation over the Internet in the past year. (Finkelhor, Mitchell, and Wolak, 2000) https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/ojjdp/191213.pdf K-State Research & Extension is offering a set of 3 Hands-on Workshops for any parent who want to: Understand the same technology their children use every day. Bridge the gap between what their children know and what they know. Be able to assist their children and protect them. The workshops will cover: Understanding of the history behind the Internet How to investigate where information is kept on a computer How to locate where some of the communications come from that our children receive.

Operation Christmas Child
Impact a child's life with a simple shoebox gift. Fill a shoebox with school supplies, basic hygiene items, toys and a note of encouragement for a child overseas suffering due to disaster, war, disease or poverty. This year, Operation Christmas Child hopes to give shoeboxes to 10 million children overseas. That brings the total to over 120 million kids receiving gift-filled shoeboxes since this project began in 1993. To learn how to get involved or to find the nearest shoebox drop-off location during National Collection Week, November 17-24, visit http://www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/ More than 4,000 shoebox drop-off locations will be listed beginning October 1, 2014
